Sunday’s the day for snippets from all kinds of authors. To find those posting on Weekend Writing Warriors, click the logo above; for snippet Sunday click the logo below. Today’s snippet is a continuation from Rescue Operation.
None of the other three had really finished the jobs they had left Central to do, but Derry had an answer to that. Is Cory around? he asked. If he is, boost him out—I’ll anchor. Then he can anchor for me to get me back here.
That’d work for them all, Roi realized—and for him, next time he needed to leave Central. He’d already decided never again to leave without setting up regular contact with someone he trusted. Any High R’il’noid could anchor over the distances usually spanned within the Confederation, and there were generally a few working as aides to the Inner councilors.
Sorry for the old photo today, but I’m still in the hospital fighting this laptop. At least I’m back in Fairbanks, but as those who read this blog know, I went back the the emergency room Saturday when I couldn’t keep food down. They diagnosed pneumonia and were ready to take me to Xray when I had a heart attack. The heart attack apparently did no damage to my heart, but was due to my blood magnesium being so low it wasn’t getting the right electrical stimulation.
The whole thing can probably be traced to my ovarian, and possibly my breast, cancer going metastatic. Yeah, even the right lung may be cancer rater than pneumonia. So far there’s no pain, but my doctor came by yesterday afternoon and said probably 6-12 months.
So I’m looking for beta readers and possibly a literary executor of the Horizon War trilogy: Rescue Operation, Both Sides Now, and War’s End. Any volunteers?
Oh, holy crows, Sue Ann.
You’ve got a beta right here, if you want one. And though I sincerely doubt I’d be the best choice of executrix, if I can help you in any way from Illinois, you ask, please. If you don’t already have my address, it’s in the sidebar of my blog.
I’m having e-mail problems right now, but I’ll send things on when I can. The trilogy’s written except the epilog.
I have no idea what a beta reader is, but you know that I’ll be happy to help in any way I can. Still trying to figure out what an executor/executrix does. Don’t think I have the background for that; we’ll keep looking for someone.
Beta Reader’s someone who reads through and critiques a manuscript. You probably wouldn’t be the best as you’re not a SF reader, but Id still value your input.
Sending huge hugs your way, Sue Ann. I don’t have the background for any of that but I’ll do what I can for you, just ask. You’re a fantastic writer and a sweetheart. My heart goes out to you for the trouble you’re having. ((Sue Ann))
I still need to get in touch with my oncologists, but at this point I’m thinking hospice rather than more chemo.
I would be happy to Beta read. Praying for some comfort to find you. Hope they can ease some of these symptoms for you. As for this snippet, I’m glad a plan is starting to form!
One of the laptop problems (and why I want to get home) is email problems, but once I can send reliabaly I start wending you the trilogy. I’s all written except the epilog and the first book’s edited.
Sending hugs and good thoughts.I’m so very sorry to hear about all that you’re going through and admire your strength. Enjoyed the excerpt today, glad Roi has some steps in mind to keep in closer touch with the votes and the politics at home. (You always do cover every twist and turn and contingency so nicely!)
Helps to have had about 10 years to go over stuff.
Great Snippet! Can’t wait to tune in next week.
Hope I’m up to posting next week.
I’m always struck by what a fascinating world you’ve built around Roi. A good snippet. 🙂
Sue Ann, I’m so sorry for your health challenges, and my heart breaks at the prognosis. I’ve come to know you via Wewriwa and SixSunday, but even limited in such a way, I’ve found you to be a good person, a straight-shooter, a talented writer, and a person who is incredibly generous in their sharing of knowledge. And it always brings the biggest smile to my face when you compliment my snippet. I’m sure I’ve done well, then. There’s no smoke or sugar-coating in your words. I’ve always been grateful for that.
I believe in miracles, even though they fly in the face of science. I hope for your miracle…
I’d be glad to Beta read for you. I don’t think I’m savvy enough to be a literary executor. I’ve not gone down the publishing road yet. I think that might be best for someone who has gone through the process.
Is there anything else I can do to help?
A big hug coming to you. ❤
Thanks for the kind words.
The beta reads will have to wait until I get back to my home computer, as I have an e-mail problem with this one. All three books of the trilogy (Horizon War) are written:
Rescue Operation, Both Sides Now and War’s End.
rescue Operation is edited; the other two are more coherent to start with.
All three have been on one the the
Saturday or Sunday snippets.
I’m speechless after reading more about your health issues. We’ve been friends for a long time across the miles. If miracles are available, I pray for some to show up at your door. You have my love and prayers, Sueann.
A month ago I felt fine and was stationary cycling a couple of hours a day. I’ve never needed oxygen before, and now I can’t do without it. At least I’m eating again today, with some return of appetite.
Sending big hugs your way. You’ve had quite a time of it. If there’s anything at all I can do to help, don’t hesitate to ask. I’d love to beta read, though I’m not sure I’d be a great choice, as much as I enjoy SF I have little understanding of the mechanics of the genre. Wishing you well!
This isn’t really standard SF. Lots of animals, heavy dose of horses and telepathic dogs.
No need to apologize. It’s great to have you hopping.
Sounds like he’s undertaking a dangerous job.

Also, I hope you get better soon. I’ve heard of many doctors eating their words as patients get better and survive. Hang in there.
Well, I’d like to think so.
I’m so sorry to hear about your health, but miracles happen every day, and you’ll be in my prayers without fail.
Thank you.
Sending hugs your way. I don’t have the skills for either. I do have some indie authors who I follow on Twitter and I hope one of them can give you either help or direction. I will continue to think of you, whether or not I come here to comment.
Right now my email is messed up, but I hope to get back on my main computer soon.
So sorry to hear the bad news. 😦 I’d be more than happy to beta read for you. Just email me at therollingwriter@gmail.com. Enjoyed the snippet as always.
Wait til I get my email straightened out.
It isn’t much but I’m keeping you in my thoughts & sending positive energy your way.
Thank you.
Dear Sueann, I’m sending thoughts of comfort and good health your way. I admire your devotion to your craft even in the face of the doctor’s words – let’s hope they are off by at least a good 10 years.
I never enjoyed SF before but I have found myself being very invested in Roi, true proof of your talent.
Sounds like Roi is contemplating another trip, he is still caring about his people and looking not to cut himself off from them. Sounds like he has a few regrets about the political woes and his last absence. Great snippet.
Most of book I is about Roi’s effort to console himself.
Roi better not leave central at all.
I hope you’ll feel better soon.
Oh, he’s setting up safeguards this time
Great Snippet.
I hope they’re wrong. I also hope you go out and do something crazy. That one thing you always wanted to. I’m sending positive thoughts and energy your way.
I hope they’re wrong, too, but there doesn’t seem much hope of that.

Your world is so rich and detailed. I love reading your snippets and have treasured your comments on my excerpts.
Thanks. The world has been building in my head for years.
