It’s Sunday, and time for Weekend Writing Warriors (click on the logo above) and Snippet Sunday (click on the logo below.) I’m still quoting from the opening of Rescue Operation, and this is a continuation from last week. Emeraude speaks first, replying to Keishala’s statement that some planets (including Central, where they live) accept slavery. The second speaker is Roi.

“Yes, there are planets that accept slavery, but Horizon doesn’t and never has. Anyway, people will accept things from their own governments that they’ll go to war to keep from having imposed on them from outside. Roi, was it a full binding vote? Can it be broken? Fast?”
“Eleven to nine, so twenty voted. That’s five-sixths of the Inner Council—all that’s needed. Wait a minute.”
Short sentences, but excited people can talk that way.

Mood and importance nicely conveyed. Sounds like an interesting read with adventure.

The reader knows what happened. Roi doesn’t.
“…Anyway, people will accept things from their own governments that they’ll go to war to keep from having imposed on them from outside…” Great observation that is too true.
Right.
that “wait a minute” at the end makes me look forward to the next snippet!
That’s serendipity — where the 8 sentences ended.
I do hope he had a plan. Sounds like he does. 🙂
He still doesn’t know everything.
Is there a loophole? Or did he see something else?
You’re a terrible tease, Sue Ann. 🙂
I don’t use creative punctuation (except to clarify pronouns) so that’s just where I wound up.
Cliff hanger here and I do love short sentence dialogue. Terrific snippet.
The whole book’s a cliff-hanger–it’s the first of a trilogy.
Can’t wait to see what inspired the “Wait a minute…” remark. Another excellent excerpt in this unfolding drama. I sense a lot of tragedy ahead till Roi gets it all straightened out.
He’s just catching on to how Zhaim managed to pull it off.
The “wait a minute” sounds good.
See next week. He’s just wondering which 20 were present.
Such a good observation on imposed versus “free” choices. Best way to get someone to agree to someting is to make them feel like they decided for themselves, but that’s clearly not what’s happening here.
Certainly not on Horizon.
I hope Roi just thought of a way out for those people. I liked Roi’s take on what people will take and what they won’t.
Roi is much better than Zhaim at foreseeing how people will react — but Zhaim doesn’t really care.
Ohhh, I wonder what Roi just thought of! Great snippet.
You’ll find out next week.
I like the short sentences. The give the sense of urgency that I think this conversation merits. Nice job!
Thanks.
Nice teaser ending.
Only because that was where the 8 sentences ended.
wait a minute…what did he just realize? Ah shucks…now I’ve got to wait another week!
Yep.
Very good point. Something you’ve chosen is way different from something you’re forced to do. Hope whatever they realized can help change the vote!
Zhaim’s done too good a job.
Hey! Way to leave us hanging. 🙂 Now I really want to know what happens next.
Strictly an accident–that was 8 sentences.
I know- that happened to me too. There’s not much room to resolve anything in those eight. Still, when in doubt, leave ’em hanging!
Love the way you gave necessary information without an info dump. And I can’t wait to see what Roi is thinking.
Shouldn’t be that much of a surprise.
Nice, tense dialogue. Leaves us wondering what Roi will come up with.
If he can come up with anything.
Your short sentences make for very effective dialogue. You’re absolutely right about excited people using them.
Excited and worried.
Lots of urgency in this snippet. Definitely curious as to what happens after the ‘wait a minute.’ Great hook ending, even though that’s just how it wound up for the 8 😉
Next week’s the continuation.
