Sunday again, and that means time for Weekend Writing Warriors (click the logo above for links to other participants) and Snippet Sunday (click the logo below.)
I am still posting from the opening scene of Rescue Operation, a novel almost ready for publication. We are in Zhaim’s POV.
If Roi could be induced to handle the problem in person, leaving Zhaim as the holder of the second highest Çeren index in charge ….
We don’t have anyone out there who can anchor a teleport, and there was considerable reluctance in Roi’s mind-touch. I’d have to take a courier out.
We don’t have anyone else who has a prayer of unraveling it, came Tethya’s reply.
Oh, give Zhaim a chance to show what he can do. Amusement spilled into Kaia’s mind-touch.
Didn’t say I wouldn’t do it. But I’ll want to take Mark as backup, and there’s going to be a lot of travel time involved.
(Italics within the snippet represent mental communication.)
I’m liking this opening scene. The mind-touch has me intrigued 🙂 Great work!
That’s an important part of the science fiction element.
The dialogue sounds so realistic and there are all sorts of interesting hooks. I wanted to keep reading.
I’ll be keeping this scene up for a while.
I love the maneuvering and the plotting on Zhaim’s part. Keep us posted on when the book gets released! Great snippet…
When and if. Wish I had an agent.
Oh boy…seems like Zhaim is going to get his wish…
Well, he has to, to set up the story.
Sounds like the plotting and manipulating is going Zhaim’s way…
For the moment.
I can’t wait to see Zhaim fail. It’s one of my favorite things. 😀
I’m afraid you’ll have to wait a while.
Not a problem, Sue Ann. Totally worth it!
I’m with Sarah. Zhaim is just so perfectly evil. Will you redeem him at all before the end of the series?
Wouldn’t you like to know.
Interesting snippet. I’m a touch confused as to who’s who, but I have no doubt that I wouldn’t be in a larger context. I do love the plotting — and seeing the inside of the villain’s mindset.
The others mentioned in this snippet are just other members of the Council.
No matter the world, it appears political intrigue is everywhere. Well done.
It’s part of being human.
Ooh. Neat world-building with the mind-touch. 🙂
Mind-touch, for the R’il’noids, is faster and easier than talking. Not so good for hiding things.
I just read the snippet from last week. I think it’s really cool you are writing a section (or the whole book?) from the POV of the antagonist. I don’t have enough info to make a decision on whether I like him or not, but it’s not often people write from the POV of the antagonist. It sounds like Roi is more skilled at teleporting than Zaim, but he doesn’t want to do it? I’m definitely curious about why the need to teleport is so urgent. Interesting, looking forward to reading more. Oh, and Zhaim’s POV is scattered through the book, but in short bits.
Teleporting in my universe, or any other esper talent, is not limited by speed of light. Teleporting a distance of light-years is something only a few can do, and the difficulty increases with the distance. The planet having the problem is outside anyone’s teleport range, so “jump-ships” (space ships that travel between two stress points in space, known as “jump points”) must be used. Exploration is relatively slow, as the jump points must be found before they can be used. Might add that the teleport distance is more than doubled if there is another teleport-capable entity “anchoring” at the destination.
Thank you for the explanation!
An intriguing snippet. So many interesting elements touched on, I’m left very curious about this world.
Some of it’s in the first two books in the series, Homecoming and Tourist Trap.
Love the world you’ve created. I like the mind-touch element.
It’s a talent with varying degrees of expression.
Politics are everywhere, in every world. And spying…
The mind-touch aspect is intriguing although at first read I found it hard to follow (until I saw your comment about italics). I agree with Karysa Fair, political intrigue is everywhere.
I was confused, was the paragraph “If Roi could be induced …Çeren index in charge” a part of the snippet?
Yes.
I’ve tried a new way of setting off the snippet with horizontal lines, but not this week.
Love this dialogue, and the mind-touch is a great element 🙂 Looking forward to more!
Mental communication is pretty common with this group.
How about a game of mind-touch where wewriwa meet by mental communication? Or not! Totally absorbing, Sueann. Thanks.
Ah, but they we wouldn’t be reading each others’ snippets.
No, don’t give Zhaim what he wants! That’s when the bad things happen!
You are sooo right.
Great snippet…I also want to keep reading to see what happens.
Well, I’ll be posting from this opening for a while.
Wouldn’t that be a cool way to communicate? Nice job.
Not everything.
I love how clearly these characters’ personalities come across. There’s nothing cardboard or boring about them. Can’t wait to find out what happens to Zhaim eventually 🙂
Thanks; I’m glad you like it.
I love your voice here. Very effective scene.
Hope it isn’t too confusing.
Hum, time travels, that sounds like fun!
Not traveling in time; just it will take time to get where he needs to go.
