It’s Sunday again, and time for Weekend Writing Warriors (click on the logo above) and Snippet Sunday (click on the logo below.) Today I’m posting 8 sentences from my first published book, Homecoming available in all formats from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and iUniverse.
This continues Roi’s controlled dream from last week.
Get away! Keep running! But Snowy was frozen in shock just long enough for the gasping giant to grab his arm and swing him against the wall, hard enough that Snowy felt bones splinter. The guard must have felt it, too, and known he was in trouble for damaging his owner’s property. His eyes flicked to the balcony railing, and he made a sudden dive for Snowy. Something in Snowy’s mind knew the guard’s intention and struck out is frantic self-preservation, and at the same instant Snowy was inside the guard’s mind, somersaulting over the balcony railing and falling, screaming, to the stone-paved floor below, while the slave he had intended to destroy before it could communicate what he’d done huddled on the balcony above ….
If you’ve been wondering about that “I think I killed a man,” this is what Roi remembers.
Next week I’m going back to to the hang gliding in Tourist Trap.
You were right, Sue Ann (of course)—things did get worse!
I’m just holding on and remembering that Roi is safe(r) now…
It does explain a bit of Roi’s past.
Gasping from this snippet. You pulled me in and never let go. I never dreamed a fantasy world could get me so involved. Thank you.
Good fantasy or science fiction has characters you can relate to.
Tense and exciting, I’m wondering if this memory is incomplete though and I’m sure there will be more to come!
Roi/Snowy is going into shock. Besides, this is a teaser for the book!
Wow, intense! I loved seeing the event from both viewpoints, added to the urgency and was quite unique. Can’t wait for more…great snippet!
Roi literally feels the emotions and the physical sensations of those around him — and he hasn’t learned to control it yet.
Whew, (wiping the sweat from my brow). That is a horrific memory!
Helps explain why he did his best to see it never happened again.
Snowy’s ability to slip into people’s minds like that is so interesting. Hopefully he learns to control it!
He’ll need some help.
Pretty cool! Can’t help feeling nervous for Roi. And you *know* I’ve been wondering about that comment ever since he said it!
And thanks for your comment on my own excerpt. You made a good point that I need to address 🙂
Great snippet–I was wondering about Roi’s comment.
That’s why I picked it.
That’s why I blogged what I did the last three weeks.
Great snippet, as always. The fact that he was in the guard’s mind as he fell must make it all the more terrifying.
Yes, at this point his empathy is more of a liability than an asset.
That’s quite a memory. Poor Roi!
He hasn’t had an easy life.
Intense scene. I can’t help but feel sorry for Roi.
Right. That was sheer, instinctive self-defense.
A chilling scene, thanks for the cue about his memory of killing a man. Gives me shudders.
He has a lot of leaning to do.
Poor Snowy had such a tough time until he learned to control his powers. Well, he had a tough life. You built the story in a way that made it all understandable though–how he became a slave. Excellent snippet, Sue Ann.
He’s trying.
He might have killed someone, but that guard was about to commit murder to cover up his ‘property damage.’ Sounds like self-defense to me…
Self-defense doesn’t exclude guilt.
Well, no. I hope it helps him forgive himself, though.
Well that explains that about Roi then, but did he really kill him? Was the guard still alive for a while if he saw Roi huddle on the balcony above? Now I want to know if he really did kill him.
The Murders of Polly Frisch
He doesn’t know himself.
Love the detail about getting inside the guard’s mind. Tense snippet!
Less his mind than his emotions and physical sensations.
I like the last sentence, still I don’t know how Roi feels about it.
Roi reacts by setting up the block against ever striking out uncontrolled again that Derik was trying to investigate with the controlled dreaming, but at the moment he’s in shock from injury and sharing the guard’s fall.
Very vivid!
Glad it comes across that way.
