It’s Sunday again, and time for Weekend Writing Warriors (click on the logo above) and Snippet Sunday (click on the logo below.) Today I’m posting 8 sentences from my first published book, Homecoming, available in a variety of formats from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and iUniverse.
Last week was a break, with an excerpt from the sequel of Homecoming, Tourist Trap. This week I’m going back to Homecoming, but to a point a little after the scene with Derik and Roi. Just remember that Roi was originally called Snowy.
“If you feel like hitting someone, run it off,” Snowy’s mother had told him. “Just make sure you’re running in the direction your owner wants. You’re not likely to get in trouble that way.”
Snowy had done a lot of running in the six months since he’d been sold away from his mother. Six months? Wait a minute, that had been years ago. Not that he’d liked his mother’s owner, or the overseers who gave most of the orders. But this new owner, and the brutes he expected to keep his slaves in line, left him half sick with fear.
Wondering about the italic portions? The controlled dreaming Roi is being subjected to has that effect — he cannot change the memory, but he is simultaneously remembering and reliving it.
Very intriguing!
I went back to Derik’s attempt to fix the block, as experienced by Roi.
How horrible to actually relive memories like that not to mention living a life like that.
(No snippet from me this week. Busy editing and catching up on a few I missed last time.)
And he is reliving them, not just remembering.
Mamma’s advice is good, even if the situation is sad.
Mama was missing some critical information, but she did her best for him.
Fascinating about the controlled dreaming…as always an excellent excerpt from you!
Controlled dreaming does have its problems.
You never cease to amaze me, Sue ann. Thanks for another mind bending eight.
Well, I do have an imagination.
The controlled dreaming is very interesting. Not nice memories to relive…
No, not nice at all.
What a situation?! I’d like to see how he deals with all of this.
How he’s dealt with it so far led to the mental explosion of the last month or so.
Great plot device with the controlled dreaming but it doesn’t feel forced. You gave a perfectly natural, logical reason for it to happen, and of course we’re going to experience everything along with Roi. Fascinating story you’ve got going on 🙂
And he doesn’t know whether he’s remembering or experiencing.
Remembering and reliving at the same time? That must be awful for him!
He’s going to get pretty confused.
Your world is so intriguing. I love it!
It’s spent years in my imagination.
Poor Snowy/Roi! I’m sorry he has to relive all this, but his backstory is fascinating.
It’s going to get worse.
Really intriguing!
It’s part of what’s made Roi what he is, however traumatic at the time.
Makes one think of the emotional torture of PTSD, I feel for this poor character.
Yes, he’s having a rough time.
How horrible for him to have to relive the past especially since it was something worth forgetting. Intriguing snippet.
But it’s the only way he can undo the damage that was done by his untrained attempt at blocking.
Maybe he should just hit someone, sometimes, it helps.
For a slave, the consequences could be devastating.
Sold away? That’s awful! Poor thing. Intense 8.
It’s an important and very real part of slavery.
