It’s Sunday, and time for authors to post snippets of their work. Click on the logos above and below this entry for the other authors.
Today it’s Horse Power (FREE again today on Amazon Kindle.) If you like it, I’d really appreciate a review. This is a little later in the story, after they’ve reached the ranch and Roi is talking with Amber’s husband, Timi.
“So how did you stop them?” Timi asked a couple of hours later.
Roi, seated on top of a molded fence panel, swung his legs as he answered. “Countered the ‘something back there’s going to eat us’ and emphasized how tasty the grass looked. Tricky part was applying it as a wave from the rear of the herd, instead of all at once. Timi, what exactly are you doing?”
“Pregnancy testing,” Timi replied. His face and hair were shaded by the broad-brimmed hat he wore, but the black curls that had escaped were streaked with white and the face that had once been black silk stretched over the fine bone structure was wrinkled around the eyes and mouth. He wasn’t old, yet, but he was certainly heading in that direction.
Roi is now the acknowledged heir to Lai, kept busy learning to be a member of the Inner council. Flame and Penny are still with him after their trip on Falaron, but Amber and Timi have become colonists on Horizon, a world Terraformed for stock rearing. It’s an idyllic planet, but the colonizing company has set things up in such a way that the colonists have a difficult time avoiding debt slavery.
Roi is sent to investigate the problem, but it appears that the colonizing company’s actions however immoral, are legal. All it seems he can do is see that Timi and Amber’s children at least have the pets they crave. But a few things have been forgotten over the centuries, and those “pets” may have a great influence on Horizon’s future.

Since I have already read this book, I remember this scene well. I sure loved Roi. Glad you’re sharing snippets from this.
Roi’s the MC in all three of my books (and in the upcoming trilogy.)
I love Roi’s abilities and the way he explains what it is he did…excellent excerpt!
It’s not evident in this story, but those abilities bring weaknesses with them.
Love the description of Timi–black silk stretched over a fine bone structure.
That’s a remembered description of Timi when he was much younger.
He wasn’t old yet…but he was certainly heading in that direction…love this line! I feel like this some days : )
Roi is non-aging, so when he sees Timi after 22 years he sees the difference.
Love the description of Timi. Very visual.
Sue Ann, your dialogue and descriptions are wonderful. Many thanks.
Glad you like them.
Timi’s an interesting character, though he has mellowed a bit from Tourist Trap.
I adore this line: “He wasn’t old, yet, but he was certainly heading in that direction.”
It’s so bittersweet.
This will be one of the major problems of Roi’s life–difference in life span.
Oy! I read them in the wrong order, Sue Ann. I’m 3/4 of the way through “Homecoming”. I wish I had more time to read. The book is excellent. Hope you’re feeling better. 🙂
Homecoming should really come first, but I put Horse Power on Amazon in large part to draw attention to the earlier books.
Well, that works, then. Tourist Trap is next?
Homecoming, Tourist Trap 1 1/2 years later, then Horse Power 22 years after that. The new trilogy starts over 200 years after Horse Power.
Hi Sue… I’m hoping you’re feeling much better!
I love it when books have the same main characters in them – the hardest thing, for me, is closing a book, knowing it’s the last I’ll get to see of a character. Pregnancy testing… I wish the snippets could be longer – your worlds are so very well drawn. I feel immediately that I’m part of the action – thanks!
I’m doing a continuation of the scene in a couple of weeks. Timi and Amber will be long dead by the time of the trilogy, but a number of their descendants are new characters.
You describe him so well. Good showing instead of telling that he’s getting old. Nice job.
Not a complete description, but I wanted to get across the changes that 22 years had made.
Interesting world set up–it reminds me a little of a Grapes of Wrath situation–legal sometimes includes some very shady dealing.
Lovely description, too. The wrinkled silk image is easy to picture.
“Legal” is always slanted toward the advantage of those who make the laws.
Your descriptions paint the picture perfectly. Great snippet as usual.
Thanks. I try to show, though I don’t always succeed.
Excellent snippet with some great description – especially the sentence some of the others above noted. Nice foreshadowing also about the pets. Good job.
Timi’s 40 in this. Roi still looks early 20’s, and will as long as he lives–which could be many centuries.
I like the description in the last paragraph.
Thanks. I wanted the contrast between Timi 22 years earlier and in the he present.
Vivid description. Definitely saw this in my mind! Great 8 🙂
I’ll have it free one more time.
