Once again I am offering a piece, contiguous with last week’s, from War’s End. Coralie is mentally linked with her dog, Bounce, who is searching for the others stranded on this strange planet. Last week wound up with a comment that the dog’s vision seemed blurred and colorless to Coralie.
But Bounce’s vision did seem brighter ahead, and when Coralie pivoted in place she could see that it was lighter in one direction–the direction Bounce was heading toward. Then Kelty’s voice rang out again. “Bounce! I can see Bounce!”
The dog hadn’t seen Kelty yet, though she heard him and his scent surrounded her. Coralie urged her to look up at the same time she shouted, “Wave your arms if you can.”

Will do.
It’s a very good thing they have Bounce along. Can’t imagine how desperate the situation would be without her to help.
The pocket herders come into all three books of the trilogy, and their origin is in a short story I’m tempted to self-publish.
I’m becoming quite attached to Bounce, partly because he reminds me a little of one of the colts I’m helping raise, Tigger. Great six!
By the way, Bounce is “she,” just in case pronouns get confusing on the snippets. Horses are important for the story, too, but not in this sequence.
Horses and dogs sound like real frontier stuff. Love it.
Coralie’s from a terraformed planet without fossil fuels, and horses and dogs saved them from debt slavery.
Great six! Bounce sounds like a great character.
Yes, she is a character.
I’m with Jess…I’m getting attached to Bounce too 🙂 Great six SueAnn
Bounce is a character in her own right.
I’m enjoying your sixes, Sue Ann. I love dogs, and really appreciate the pivotal role Bounce plays in your book.
Bounce is one of a number of pocket herders who play important roles in the trilogy.
Boy I’d love to have a dog like Bounce for a pet. It’s clear that this story can’t exist without Bounce. Good six Sue Ann!
Bounce, like a Border Collie, would be bored stiff as just a pet. She’s the kind who has to have something to do, and if she doesn’t, she’ll find something.
I love dogs and Bounce is definitely a winner with me. 🙂 Great six!
I tried to combine the sensitivity, eagerness to please and size of a Sheltie with the herding instincts of a Border Collie, adding some telepathic ability. But she’s based on real dogs, as I’ve had both breeds. And I swore one or two of them read my mind.
Good thing the dog’s there 🙂
Good thing they’re all there.
I always look forward to your posts on Sunday! Love Bounce 🙂 You’ve created an amazing world.
Thanks. I love her, too.
Bounce is such a great “character” and a terrific way for Coralie to be in on stuff when she’s not actually present! Enjoyed your six this week.
She’s got a lot more to do in the future. Hope I can get this published.
Again, I’m struck by the unique factor of their relationship. And it seems to be an integral part of his relationship with Coralie. I love how smart she was about how she used their link. Excellent.
Unique? Not really. It’s typical of this breed of dog, but Coralie’s just learning how to use it.
I like Bounce, glad to know she’s a she! And horses are coming later – yay! This book has so many terrific elements going on, I really enjoy the excerpts each week.
Actually, the horses and dogs are introduced in books one and two (Rescue Operation and Horizon War working titles.) Not on Rakal, though Coralie comes from a horse-breeding, nomadic culture.
The connection and the situation make for an intriguing read. Tense!
