This is the end of the first chapter of my current WIP (at the editing stage) Rescue Operation, continuing on from last week. It’s the first book of a trilogy, starting a couple of hundred years after the end of Tourist Trap.
He [Roi] leaned back, closing his eyes, and the pair took the hint and left. Dad, Roi thought miserably, Marna, why did you have to die and leave me with this? It’s more than I can handle. I’m doing my best, but I don’t think my best is good enough. And Zhaim’s not helping. At worst, if he’s escaped the bonds you put on him–Roi didn’t even want to think about that.
Nice snippet of introspection here where we see Zoi feeling a little overwhelmed…
You can feel the confusion….well done six Sue Ann!
Poor Roi. I hope Zhaim hasn’t escaped. Good mood-setting here.
He sounds so tired and as if he’s carrying the weight of the world – effective excerpt!
Nice set up, Sue Ann, and a great look into Roi’s mind.
Hmm…what kind of trouble can Zhaim be?
Well, Zhaim’s the one who pushed through the slaving on Horizon while Roi was gone. And he made a very nearly successful attempt to kill Roi a couple of hundred years ago. Marna forced a conscience on him then, but Roi’s having trouble convincing the other Council members to help him in keeping it up. (All this is earlier in the chapter.)
A difficult situation for Roi with a lot of conflict to come! Your last line sounds like foreshadowing to something ominous. Nice six, Sue Ann! 🙂
Like the insight we get into him here. Thanks for sharing!
I hope Zhaim hasn’t escaped. Good six!
Nice sense of despair here. Great job of portraying his emotion!
LIke how you’ve shown Roi’s emotional weight.
