Happy Halloween! Any outdoor real pumpkins here will freeze, though.
Sunrise this morning was at 9:35 am – well after my alarm went off – and the sun will set tonight at 5:33. The day length has already dropped below 8 hours, and the sun at its highest is 11° above the horizon – barely above the treetops. October may be fall in most of the country, and a week ago in Arizona I was sweltering in 80 degree temperatures, but here in Fairbanks winter has started.
I returned to snow, as I predicted. Already it’s over 4” deep, and it will probably remain, as the base of this year’s snowpack, until April. Driving south requires not only sunglasses, but lowered sun visors, and there is enough ice on the roads to produce a noticeable glare. My inability to drive in the dark means that once again I am housebound, except around noon, until next spring.
On the plus side, that means I’ll have more time to write. Maybe I’ll get that trilogy polished up! And my 500th post should be coming up this month. Any suggestions for how to celebrate?

Wow and we think a month or two’s hibernation is enough to drive us crazy, you must have it down pat, thank goodness you are a writer!
It sounds kind of appealing, but I am sure the novelty does wear off – thank goodness for social networking as well, as long as you have power or battery I guess you have contact.
Happy Halloween! Wow, 500th blog post. That should be a special one. How about a giveaway?
I’m thinking of giving away a couple of copies of my books with entry by commenting on any of my posts, with some key phrase to eliminate autospammers. Any suggestions for how to manage a drawing? Probably start next Thursday. I’ll probably need a double post (Maybe a poem and an announcement of the contest?) to have the 500th fall on a Saturday rather than a Sunday, as it wouldn’t fit the rules for Six Sentence Sunday. That would make the contest run from Nov 3 to 19, with the 500th post on the 19th. Any ideas for publicizing? Comment on any post, even last year’s — I’ll get a yahoo notification of any comments. SheWrites, Twitter and facebook are obvious, and I suppose Goodreads…
This storm came freakishly early for you guys. I’m sorry, but I am glad you are looking at the bright side and staying in to write. After living in New Mexico for a number of years and moving back to the Midwest a few months ago, this will be my first winter in a long time and I’m not looking forward to it. Happy writing!
Not particularly early for Fairbanks. The snow cover normally gets established in October here. It was the northeast that got their snow really early.
Here in Northern California, it was positively balmy on Halloween. I should feel guilty, but I don’t!
Congratulations on reaching your 500th post. Quite an accomplishment.
