All but the last of this week’s quotes were from Mercedes Lackey, mostly because her books are so easy to find good twitter-length quotes from. Shin’a’in and Tayledras proverbs are especially useful, and you’ll find several here.
“Whatever is prepared for never occurs.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Change. Shin’a’in proverb, quoted (with the addition of hisses) by Hydona when she is teaching Elspeth to use her magic.
“The trouble with proverbs is that they’re truisms.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Change. Darkwind, responding to Elspeth’s quoting a Shin’a’in proverb.
“It is no boast when it is fact.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Change. Shin’a’in proverb, quoted by the representative of K’Treva when describing Firewind.
“He is disposed toward grandiose plans, and those take time to prepare.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Fury. Vanyel’s ghost, speaking about Ancar to Elspeth and her friends.
“Glorious destinies get you glorious funerals.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Fury. Stephen’s ghost, quoting Vanyel, as he comments to Skif on Gwenna’s messing things up with her “glorious destinies.”
“Love means being able to apologize and mean it when you blunder.” Mercedes Lackey, Winds of Fury. Stephan’s ghost, explaining the difference between life-bonding and love to Skif.
“Seasons might be subtle in the tropics, but they were present.” Sue Ann Bowling, Tourist Trap. Marna is musing on the importance of axial tilt.

“Whatever is prepared for never occurs.” Mercedes Lackey
That is my favourite! It is so very true!
I have not heard of Mercedes Lackey, Sue, what type of book does she write? Looks like you have read and re-read these two Mercedes books many times!

Mercedes Lackey writes fantasy, and quite a wide range of fantasy types from retelling opera stories (Black Swan, Firebird) and fairy tales to urban fantasy , paranormal, and the world in which Valdemar is set. She is a wonderful story-teller, though there are some repeated descriptive phrases in her early books that made me wince when she kept repeating them. I’d say she, Andre Norton and Anne McCaffrey are probably the greatest influences on my own science fiction writing. Her books are very good for Twitter quotes — others I sometimes have to skim for an hour or two and find nothing.
Love love love Misty Lackey – how did I miss you sending out these quotes? (Prolly the working fulltime and trying like mad to get around to everything in my “spare” time thing. And because I’m not on Twitter, much.)
If you start reading the first books Lackey wrote, and progress forward from there, you can really see her learning, growing and improving as a writer, though she’s always had great ideas and is a wonderful storyteller. I think Kerowyn (By The Sword) also uses the quote about glorious funerals.
MZB has some excellent philosophies in her books, too, and possibly Jennifer Roberson in her Cheysuli novels. (She did shapeshifters long before shapeshifters was trendy.)
I actually wrote a story for the Darkover collections once–and that was the year MJB stopped publishing them before I ever sent it in. I’ve used her, but she’s not as easy to find quotes in as Misty. I have most of the Darkover series, though, and might start trying them more.
1 & 5 are my favorites. Both are very true and easy to relate to.
I haven’t read anything by her for a while. Must remedy that. Love the glorious destinies quote.
